| BASIC ROPES AND KNOTS (5-12 Only)
One of the early skills mankind used to survive in many situations was ropes and knots. Participants will explore the origins and uses of ropes. Rope terminology and simple knots will be learned and practiced. A group problem solving initiative will be used to help participants understand the mechanics of knotting. 1 activity period (1 1/2 hours) Grades 4-12 |

MAPPING A STUDY SITE
(Grades 5-12) Before conducting a specific investigation at an outdoor site, it is a good idea to become familiar with the site as a whole. Participants will experience the opportunity to develop and use skills pioneers relied on to “get the lay of the land” and identify the major features of their own site by applying a mapping strategy which involves adding physical and biological features to a simple outline map of an area. 1 activity period (1 1/2 hours) |
| BASIC COMPASS (Grades 5-12)
Orienteering is finding one’s way (navigating) across known an unknown terrain using the basic pacing method, and progressing to using a map and /or compass. Participants will be involved in problem-solving situations that utilize map and compass reading skills (including math) keen observation of natural terrain and the excitement of the challenge. 1 activity period (1 1/2 hours)
